With all of the amazing things our smart phones can do, we rarely stop to ask, “Can any of this hurt me somehow?”
In the case of the GPS in our iPhones and Android phones, the answer might be “Yes.”
What many don’t realize is that their GPS doesn’t turn off when they’re not using apps like Google Maps — it stays on. This can make an individual vulnerable from multiple sources, including hackers and, some would say, the government and local law enforcement. (Anyone else feel like they’re in a sci fi novel?)
Some workplaces are even starting to track employees through phone apps they’re required to have to do their jobs. Is it just me, or does that sound like a huge invasion of privacy?
The GPS might also post your general location when you use social media, clueing thieves in that you’re not home, making you a target.
Thankfully, you can disable the GPS tracker! Here’s how…
iPhone: From settings, go to privacy. Click Location Services. Scroll down to System Services. Click Frequent Locations, and then turn it off.
Android: Click on settings. Click Location preferences. Disable the Google Location History, which will turn the GPS off.
